Follow Up Questions

Remember when I posted this picture and asked what was wrong with it?

My morning routine includes a wonderful mug of Finca Ruiz coffee which is grown just a few miles away from Boquerón, checking my emails and reading a few of my favorite blogs. One of them is RichardDetrich.com. This morning he had this picture by Rubens in his post…

And there’s this one by Lucas Cranach the Elder…

Same problem. If one takes the Bible literally, and believes that “God took some clay from the ground and made the shape of a man. Then He breathed gently into the shape. The man’s eye’s opened and he began to live. God called him Adam…” and that “God took a rib from Adam’s side and made a woman.” Why do these paintings show Adam and Eve with navels?

Which leads us to the inevitable questions of, if God created man in his own image, does God have a navel? If so, why?

I think the logical answer is that God must have a navel; we can ponder why for eternity. But it does answer your first riddle.

    Hey Richard,

I’m the hillbilly who commented on your post about West Virginia shantyboats. I appreciated your thoughtful response and apologize for not replying sooner [and I guess I waited too long, because that post seems to be closed to further remarks].

Anyway, you asked, “If God made man in His image, does God have a navel?” Well, to me the question is moot, because I’m an atheist. It’s a classic dilemma though, and good food for thought.

    I hope you are well.

    John

  4. I grew up in an evangelical fundamentalist church.. you know the ones who believe in original creation of man at around 5000 BC… in around 5th grade we were learning about dinosaurs in school and so on Sunday I posed the question to my Sunday School teacher… “Well.. she said.. there was no world before Adam and Eve.. God CREATED the dinosaur bones in the ground to confuse the foolishness on man! Pastor preached on it not long ago…” So I suppose her excuse will account for the navel in the paintings also that they were created that way.. LOL

BTW I am in lowcostvoyaging group also and just built the seaswing stove in your archives

  5. I grew up an a Fundamentalist Evangelical church.. you know the ones who believe in literal creation at about 5000 BC. I was in 5th grade and we were learning about dinosaurs and so in Sunday School I posed the question to my teacher “Oh.. she said.. there was no world before Adam and Eve.. God CREATED the dinosaur bones in the ground to confuse the foolishness of man! Pastor preached on it not long ago!” I suppose her logic would include the navel as well.. God simply created it that way… nuff said LOL

I am also in the lowcostvoyaging group and just made your economy seaswing stove in your archives. I have a Buccaneer 24 and hope to sail her south. i did it in the 90’s with an old plywood sharpie as far south as Venezuela. I am thinking of the Bocas area to visit. I would love to correspond or are you in any groups?

    Regards,
